I am an educator with a diverse background in education, performing arts, and technology. I taught music education in grades K-8 for nine years before acquiring a Masters in Education with an emphasis in technology and moving into an elementary position as a Technology Integration Specialist. Currently, I am a Digital Learning Coach at the middle school level, where I provide support for students and teachers in a 1:1 iPad environment. I work with teachers to use digital assessment online to guide instruction and I carry a large box of digital tools to spark creativity and collaboration among students. I am a lifelong learner and look forward to what technology innovation can do for education in the 22nd century.

EL work is important to Mrs. Dent and she works closely with teachers to plan, implement, and document the work throughout an expedition. 8th grade teachers at MGM kicked off the Take A Stand expedition by simulating a rally for year round school and inspiring students to Take A Stand through research and service. Mrs. Dent assisted teachers in planning and documenting the event.

Working with students
Mrs. Dent's most grueling and proudest work came in 2015 through the 7th grade case study, The Choice to Serve. Veterans from all US campaigns of war were invited to share their story of the Choice to Serve their country. Videographers and producers from local TV and PBS station shared their expertise in documenting and interviewing. Students also were fortunate to hear from Congressional medal recipient, Kyle Carpenter and mental health experts on PTSD. Groups of 5-6 students contacted their local veteran, researched their story, arranged for an in-person interview, and videotaped the veterans story. Mrs. Dent assisted each group with recording and editing. Students, teachers, and veterans all gained from this powerful project.

Mrs. Dent supports over 1200 students and staff at Meadow Glen Middle School, each with a mobile computing device. She has found that short video tutorials posted to Schoology (districts learning management system) has the greatest effect on student learning and removing the barrier a creativity tool might add when trying to demonstrate a students level of knowledge. This is a sample of an iPad tutorial for an app students might use to create models of their learning.

Watching kids create fun, compelling stories is the best part of Mrs. Dent's job. Through the use of apps, web 2.0 tools, software, and iPads, students learn to tell stories that engage and inform.
7th grade students took on a service project with a new organization in South Carolina, Teen Cancer America. They created a social media campaign and egg cracking contest to bring awareness and raise funds to bring a teen cancer unit to a hospital in SC. This video was created by our town hall leaders in 7th grade for the What's the Cost expedition. Video demonstrates green screen video effects, script writing, research, and community service. |
